The U.S. Border Patrol was founded in 1924 with just 450 agents tasked with securing the U.S.-Mexico border. In the decades since, the agency has grown into a roughly 20,000-strong force operating across every U.S. border and beyond. From stopping smugglers during Prohibition, to securing ports during World War II, to trailblazing the post-9/11 homeland security mission, Border Patrol has evolved with the times while never wavering from its core duty: securing our nation’s borders.
