Coming to Netflix in November 2018
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - November is packed with Netflix Originals and films and a fair amount of classic titles joining the catalog. I tried to limit myself to five recommended titles this month, but still ended up with ten. It easily could have been fifteen and I know very little and haven't seen the majority of the Netflix produced titles. Now if we could only convince Netflix to breathe life back into FilmStruck, maybe November wouldn't feel like a funeral dirge.
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Francis Ford Coppola's take on Bram Stoker's classic novel "Dracula" was a minor hit in America, but found even more success overseas. It's not a perfect movie, but its exquisite cinematography by Michael Ballhaus (a frequent Coppola collaborator) and production design by Thomas E. Sanders is so inviting that I can't help but stop to watch it whenever its on. Any film featuring Winona Ryder, Tim Waits, Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins gets my undivided attention.
Children of Men
Director/writer Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 release "Children of Men" is a sci-fi classic. It takes place in a world where woman have all become infertile. Mankind toils at the edge of extinction. Hopeless and resigned. And then, a sliver of light, as a woman has become pregnant, but to survive she'll need to get out of London.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Speaking of classics, Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is also making its way to Netflix. The film sees a group of scientists researching the appearance of strange objects that seem to have extraterrestrial origins. Meanwhile, a group of blue-collar people in Muncie, Indiana witness paranormal activity that also suggests that humanity isn't alone in the universe. There are numerous cuts of the film that have been made available over the decades since its 1977 release. I'm assuming that Netflix will be streaming the "Collector's Edition' cut, but it could very well also be the 1980 "Special Edition." The irony being that all three cuts are simply variations on a theme of excellence.
Jet Li's Fearless
I discovered Hong Kong cinema in my early twenties and Jet Li was my instant favorite (primarily based on the strength of the Once Upon a Time In China films). When "Fearless" was released in 2006, Li had made a name for himself around the world having appeared in English-language features like "Lethal Weapon 4," "Romeo Must Die," "The One" and "Unleashed." "Fearless" was a throw back to the Chinese films that had originally made him famous, It (loosely)tells the story of Huo Yuanjia, a famed warrior who fought (literally) for the honor of China against Western imperialism. Again, this is a film that has had at least three different versions released. The director's cut, the longest of the lot, includes Michelle Yeoh is a subplot that is nonexistent in the original theatrical release. Netflix will likely feature the theatrical version.
The Other Side of the Wind-- NETFLIX FILM
In 1970 famed actor/director Orson Welles began working on "The Other Side of the Wind," a black and white mockumentary about an aging director who is trying to reestablish himself in Hollywood. The film ran into numerous issues and filming didn't complete until 1976. The film never was finished due to numerous reasons. In 2017, Netflix was able to secure the original negatives. 48 years after the start of principal photography, the film made its world premier at the 75th Venice International Film Festival earlier this year. The Great British Baking Show: Collection 6-- NETFLIX ORIGINAL
"The Great British Banking Show" is a highly addictive British program that brings together 12 amateur bakers and gives them a series of challenges over a series of weeks. One by one bakers are eliminated each week. It's highly addictive, but you probably already knew that. (Available 11/9/18)
Green Room
I vividly remember sitting in the Salt Lake City Library watching "Green Room," a violent punk-rock thriller, at an early Sundance Film Festival screening. Jeremy Saulnier's story about a band who accidentally witness a homicide in the green room of a venue ran by white supremacists was like a burst of adrenaline. Sometimes horror films aren't about the boogeyman, they're about the darkest aspects of modern society. Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Patrick Stewart and Alia Shawkat are uniformly excellent. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power-- NETFLIX ORIGINAL
She-Ra was initially created by Mattel in an attempt to capture the imaginations of girls in the same way that He-Man had become popular among boys. Let's hope that the DreamWorks reboot of the franchise has higher goals. If their work on the Voltron reboot is anything to go by, then "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" may prove to be a smarter take on the character and not just a bid to tap into the seemingly bottomless need for '80s nostalgia. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs-- NETFLIX FILM
"The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is a six-story anthology of stories inspired by the wild frontier written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The duo were awarded the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay at this year's Venice International Film Festival. It stars the likes of Liam Neeson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Tyne Daly, and Tom Waits. (Available 11/16/18)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
While a documentary about an 85-year-old sushi master might not sound like the most promising way to spend 81 minutes, "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" is a fascinating study of a man in constant search of a perfection he knows he'll never achieve. (Available 11/22/18)
