Savannah Arts falls short of clawing their way back to a win in the girls soccer state championship
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Arts Lady Panthers made some history on Friday. It was the girls soccer program’s first-ever appearance in the state championship.
On their way to the title match, the Panthers outscored their opponents 24-2.
However, on Friday, Pike County got off to an incredibly hot start -- they scored two goals in just a minute and nine seconds.
Quickly finding themselves in a hole, the Panthers worked hard to battle back, and next thing you know, it was square at two just five minutes in.
Pike County got a couple back, so at the half, they led 4-2. But coming out of the break, the Panthers were not giving up. They cut the deficit to one at the three-minute mark in the second.
After trading goals once more, it was 5-4 Pike County with under thirteen minutes to play, until Amelia Reci found the back of the net off a header and tied the game at five.
But with five minutes on the clock, Pike County was able to squeak one through goal across the line for the game-winner.
Savannah Arts fell 6-5, coming up just short of their first title.
